How Salicylic Acid Works
Salicylic acid (BHA) is oil-soluble, meaning it can penetrate into pores and dissolve the sebum and dead skin cells that cause blockages. Unlike glycolic acid which works on the surface, salicylic acid works inside the pore — making it specifically effective for blackheads and cystic acne.
Choosing Concentration
0.5-2% is the standard OTC range. The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution is effective for most people. Start with lower concentrations if you have sensitive skin.
How to Use
Apply to clean skin after cleansing. Start 2-3 times per week, build to daily as tolerated. Always follow with SPF in the morning. Can be combined with niacinamide in your routine.
