Why Lactic Acid is the Best Exfoliant for Pakistani Sensitive Skin

Pakistan's popular chemical exfoliants — glycolic acid and salicylic acid — are effective but require an intact, tolerant skin barrier. For the significant percentage of Pakistanis with sensitive, rosacea-prone, or eczema-affected skin, these stronger actives cause persistent redness, flaking, and irritation that discourages consistent use.

Lactic acid is the solution. As an alpha hydroxy acid derived from milk, it has a larger molecular size than glycolic acid — which means it penetrates more slowly, causing significantly less irritation while still delivering effective exfoliation. It also has a built-in hydrating effect: lactic acid is part of the skin's Natural Moisturising Factor (NMF), so it both exfoliates dead skin cells AND attracts water to the skin simultaneously. This dual action makes it uniquely suited to dry Pakistani skin in winter that needs exfoliation but cannot tolerate glycolic acid's stripping effect.

How to Use Lactic Acid in Pakistan's Climate

Lactic acid products in Pakistan are available in two main forms — leave-on serums/toners and rinse-off treatments. The approach differs:

Leave-on lactic acid (5-10% concentration): The Ordinary Lactic Acid 5% + HA (gentle) or 10% + HA (moderate) are the most accessible. Apply to clean, dry skin in the evening, 2-3x per week. Do not rinse. Apply moisturiser after 5-10 minutes. The hyaluronic acid in The Ordinary formula provides immediate hydration while the lactic acid works at the skin surface overnight.

Important: Always follow with SPF 50 the next morning. AHAs including lactic acid increase UV sensitivity for 48-72 hours after application. This is non-negotiable in Pakistan's high-UV climate.

Summer adjustment: Reduce to once weekly during June-August when skin is already stressed by heat and sun exposure. Use a lower concentration (5%) in summer versus a higher concentration (10%) in winter when skin is drier and more tolerant of chemical exfoliation.

For very sensitive skin: Start with 5% lactic acid once weekly. After 4 weeks without irritation, increase to twice weekly. Most sensitive Pakistani skin tolerates this frequency indefinitely — lactic acid is mild enough to become a permanent part of the routine rather than a temporary treatment.
